Family and Couples Therapy

For couples and families, the assumption is made that the couple or family operates as a system like a physical structure. When a person acts, he causes change in all the other people in the system. So the family or couple must be treated both as an entity, and each person's contribution to the dysfunction must be identified. External situations also enter into the system (like a job loss) that then impacts everyone in the system.

Like a domino effect, one person's behavior affects everybody else in the family system. Treatment focuses on problem solutions, and enhanced communication between family members. Family and couples therapy can result in less family stress and a more functional way of dealing with problems and interpersonal interactions. Sometimes a person's individual problems interfere with the smooth functioning of the family or couple. In these cases individual psychotherapy is indicated in conjunction with the couple or family psychotherapy.
